Vold Book - Crime & Punishment

He was just a boy, when he knew
What must be done; to live in such
A state could never please him
Seeing his father in that way
Always at the mercy of the creditor
And so he left home
Going out into the world
All alone

In higher education
He might find his cause
And with his wife by his side
They would create a safe place
For their children to grow up
A diplomat, or a banker
Trading securities on
The exchange
Just a little nest egg, for
The family all grown up
Everything was simple
Just to have enough

It was all so charmed and
Went according to plan
He made millions unexpectedly
Guarding it all so carefully
Knowing how it all might pass
With a bad investment
And pleasing his wife
Who was scared of what
Might come, if they lost it all
They were well aware of
The fortune that they had
Been given, that they had built

There were others that they saw
Some of whom they knew, that
Were facing difficult times
The husband and the wife gave
Generously: both in person
And institutionally
But there was little they could do
About the plight of the world
But they did what they could

The children were innocent
And protected from all of this
Eventually they'd come to know
The troubles and the risks
But not today, if the
Two of them could help it
Guiding them along their way
Teaching them
And nurturing them
To find the inner voice
My parents were good
Though the story
Somewhat changed

Many years later, in a
Crystal palace all my own
I realized that I had not
Done all that I could do
I went searching for a clue
For what was missing
And I found you

You taught me, to
Give back ten-fold
What I had been given
I didn't know how
But we set out to do this
Together

Facing the troubled weather
Facing the storm, that was brewing
Over resources and fairness
We didn't want to have to pick a side
For we knew that goodness was everywhere
Some of the rich were the best we'd ever
Found, and some of the poor were too
It's such a shame
That lines are drawn
And the misery spreads
When the violence
Upends the peace
That we have known
And cherish
Will the gap ever close
I do not know
Nor do I know how to close it
But I will try my best
With what I have been given
With what I have built
With my wife
And my children
By my side

Money is just a thing
That separates us all
What truly matters is
The union that we share
But I understand, that not
Everyone sees it this way
To some it's more important
Than anything else; either
Craving it, or despising it
Fueling passions, over its nature
And how it defines who we are

Both crime, and punishment
Are experienced near and far
By the fortune few, and the
Ones who pay the dues
All their life; never
Getting ahead
Slaving away, until they're dead
With no inheritance to pass on
I choose them, to
Dedicate this song
For the wealthy who decide
To devote themselves to all
I say, "Well done"
But the job is not finished
You hold the levers, to
Which we are all bound
In chains, and
You hold the keys
To free us all
You haven't done this
Why not

It's a simple question, and
I do not know the answer
It just seems to me that fear keeps you
From giving all that you could
The fear of losing what you have
And your impulse to protect it
But while you store away
The fortunes you have made
A little goes a long way
And you know that it's unfair
That you commit a crime
And we serve the time
It may be legal now
But it's immoral
And it will change
All around the world
I hope to live to see it
And to help in a tiny way

Justice shall prevail
For each and every one
The time is right, for
The deed to be done
The day is long, and
We're still waiting
