Jim O'Mulloy - Crossing of St Paul's

Got to get across this bridge before the days too late
Seems so hard to carry on beneath this heavy weight
Stumble on the paving stone, feinting and I fall
Failing once again before the gateway of Saint Pauls

Violet distance in the west
Where the workers come to rest
Over on the green bank I can hear my baby call

River flowing to the east
London clay washed out to sea
Children play in Eden far beyond these city walls

By the crossing of Saint Pauls

I left my only child waiting at the nursery gate
All day kept in safety, captive of the caring state
Dawn was scarcely breaking as we catch the Blackfriars train
Arriving at the station cross the bridge in wind and rain

City wakes with smoke and sighs
River rising on the tide
Shame to say a thought suggests one step to end it all

Sunshine breaks through misty reach
Silver waters shine in peace
Dominated by a dome that stands so wide and tall

At the crossing of Saint Pauls

Take me over
Put wings on my shoulder
Let sun shine light the day
Make me bolder
With grace to grow older
Let patience guide the way

Winter evening when we meet beneath the street light's arc
Push her home along the road as cars charge through the dark
Picture books console us as we close our eyes and dream
Of another world where all this madness will be redeemed

Undermine the pride of towers
Sidewise spread of root and flowers
Claim the earth for creatures of the river, tree and field

From the ruins of gods and men
To a land where sadness ends
Life will find a new way as the gilded statues yield

And fall
