Ryan Sweezey - Fool's Gold

I went down to the river
To see what I could find
I could not believe my luck
Reached into the water
My eye'd caught a shine
Finally some gold I had struck
I dug in deeper
Unearthed even more
Hidden in the cold riverbed
Took all I could carry
And turned from the shore
But fool's gold was all it had been
My pan had been rusty
From years of unuse
It masked it with brown copper stains
And I was so happy
From what I'd exhumed
That I had possessed no restraint
I should have known
From the way it reflected
Light that was outside of me
But I was so eager
I never inspected
And fool's gold was all I'd received
Filled with excitement
I ran into town
To show all my friends what I'd found
Put me up on their shoulders
And carried me round
These rich feet flew high off the ground
Maybe they knew
But just had as much hope
A glimmer of it was enough
Thought I'd found my fortune
She took back the loan
'Cause fool's gold was all that it was
I thought she could save me
But I'm still alone
'Cause fool's gold was all that it was
