TurtleFrogMan - Fourth String Quarterback

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
I never took the field even one single time
But I was prepared just the same

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
Three of my team mates would have had to be injured
Before I could enter the game

The legendary quarterback Sir Francis Tarkenton was my prepubescent quarterbacking hero
He was a smaller man compared to all the big men on the team
But he could scramble round, maneuver quick and bob

And I dreamt that I could play like him
I practiced in the backyard but the chances of that turned out to be zero
And I tried out for the football team my freshman year in high school
With my heart set on the quarterbacking job

Just like Francis I was smaller than my team mates
But, as they say, to our genetics we are shackled
I didn't have a rocket for an arm to be completely honest
All my passes were like badly wounded ducks
I tried to scramble like the legendary Francis,
But I was way too slow and always wound up tackled
"He's a pretty decent fellow" was the general consensus
But at football this poor white kid really sucks"

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
I never took the field even one single time
But I was prepared just the same

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
Three of my classmates would have had to be injured
Before I could enter the game

If our number one quarterback heaven forbid, were laid flat by an oncoming train
And our number two quarterback, heaven forbid, were to fall down and rupture his knee
And our number three quarterback, heaven forbid, were to suffer with unbearable pain
Then who can step in and lead the team onto victory, that's right, you guessed it, it's me

Fast forward to the last game of our season, seconds left
We were way ahead the game now out of reach
I was sitting on my ordinary spot upon the bench
And I heard the coach was yelling out for me
I ran over and he grabbed me by the face mask
Very sternly, with conviction like a pastor did he preach
He said, "this will be the last play of your quarterback career
Just take the snap and then you get down on one knee"

So I ran out on the field for the last play of the game
Just a second left was showing on the clock
And I wondered what would happen if I scrambled like Sir Francis
unexpected, to the end zone I could walk!
So I took the snap and scrambled to the right with no one blocking
They all looked at me like I was some buffoon
And I tripped and fell and that was it my final game was over
But Fran Tarkenton was there that afternoon

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
I never took the field even one single time
But I was prepared just the same

I was the fourth string quarterback
Of the Danville High School Vikings
Three of my classmates would have had to be injured
Before I could enter the game
