Don't Call Me Ishmael - Gloam

We met in a nameless town, we met in an unremarkable bar
Where I had gone to find myself - but I wasn't there
You sat down opposite, though 20 seats were vacant
You spoke to me in a smoky drawl, to ask if the seat was taken, then you said;

"Why do you run away? It's obvious to the blind!
But no-one ever ran so far, that they left their past behind"

I said I wasn't running, you said I must be joking
No-one would come here otherwise; the beer is terrible and the service stinks
I said maybe I'm just running for pleasure, for the thrill of the journey, of a job well done?
She laughed so hard, I thought she'd choke, she said; "You think that's why you run?"
Maybe she had a point, my life had reached an impasse
But I kind of liked it way out here, I didn't want to go back

I don't think I was built for these times
Born too sensitive by a mile
I take everything straight to heart
I know that I should talk to someone
But it's easier to force those thoughts down
No-one dies if the race never starts

Go back to the ones you left behind
Those people love you, they'll understand
Whoever you choose to be, whatever you choose to do
Just tell them what you told me and say St. Ishmael sent you

With that I knew she was right
I finally opened my eyes
It is a long road to walk back down
But it's quicker if I drive
