Tanner Laws - Health of the Herd

They're up before light
Climbs over the peak
She meets him in the kitchen
With a peck on the cheek
They sit on the front porch
Covered in blankets
Sippin' their coffee
Eatin' eggs and bacon
And they watch the sunrise
First time since they finished hayin'
He loads the truck up
Bails in the bed
She gets the kids up
For the day ahead
They meet back at supper time
To read God's word
And pray for the family
And the health of the herd
Last night had a windstorm
And the fences need tending
Their backs and their knees
Have done so much bending
Somehow their bodies'
Are still working like they're used to
But they ain't said nothin'
Cuz the work needs doin'
Blood, sweat, and tears
Are their practice that's proven
Their purpose in life
They quickly learned
Was to care for a family
And the health of the herd
They've seen their share of hardship
Took the good with the bad
Shoe-laces and bailing twine
Just to pull out a still born calf
They dry their eyes
And thank God for all they have
He loads the truck up
Bails in the bed
She gets the kids up
For the day ahead
They meet back at supper time
To read God's word
And pray for the family
And the health of the herd
Thank God for the family
And the health of the herd
