Vold Book - Obscura

Simone frantically searched the dresser for the cash
Stashed behind some old linens
She pulled everything out, but it was gone

How could this be? She collapsed into a panic

Pierre, her father, was just weeks away from surgery to prevent blindness
Without the surgery, he would certainly lose his sight
And everything that their family had fought for would be gone
Simone was devasted
Nearly fainting, she gasped for breath
She had been played

The only one who knew about the money was Friedrich, her lover
Friedrich and Simone had met on holiday in Acapulco
Everything was perfect back then, but so much had changed
What was once a beautiful romance had slipped, subtly at first
But increasingly the weight of money had come between them
It wasn't talked about, but the tone of their love had become dark
The unspoken hung like a cloud, threatening to storm

Friedrich, Simone whispered aloud
She knew that he was gone
Even the porcelain vase was gone
The one which he had given to her as an anniversary gift
It was like he had not only vanished from her life
But tried to take with him all memory that he had ever been there at all
Such a fool, the savings was her father's
And she could never forgive Friedrich for this act

The years passed, and Simone was alone
Her bitterness fermented and matured
Pierre had died after only four years of blindness
His company and the purpose of his life went bankrupt
There was nothing left
Except a growing thirst, for revenge
For justice: an eye for an eye
Simone would see to it that Friedrich would suffer
She was working towards this end, saving once again
Though this time her motives were foul
Slaving away in the shadow of the day, earning with forbearance
Living well below her means: motivated and driven to succeed
She was nearly there, having networked on the other side of the tracks
She had tracked down an assassin, available to her for a fee

They met in a park, and she brought half of the payment to blind Friedrich
She didn't want to know the details, but demanded proof of the deed
She was told that this would be no problem, her mercenary agreed

Friedrich was still living in Paris, an unbelievable fact
It would cost her less than she had been told
With the extra money, she could leave behind this life
And start over, somewhere other than here
She would meet her man in the park in a couple of weeks
After everything had been settled, and she would pay him in full
He was discrete, and Simone was pleased
She thought about Mexico walking home that night, along the street
And every memory of his Friedrich's face, she cursed
Defacing their love, with her mind

He was successful but when they met, he brought two photographs
One of proof, and another of an entirely different sort
She looked at both of them
The mercenary passed along a message
As her hand went to her mouth, in shock
There had been a boy there with him

The photo on the back was labelled: Friedrich and Pierre, adopted son
She thought of her father and the sins of time
And paid off her master, who left her standing there
