The Daylight Factory - Potemkin

The Empress is coming
Floating down the river
On a barge of golden garbage
Heaped like glowing coal
Threatening to swamp the hull

Some peasants with
A taste for boots
Have hoisted whole towns
Thin as sails, cut with holes
To keep from blowing over

Today, they wear pants
Without patches, shoes with
Whole soles, and hide their
Growling stomachs with the
Roar of strong music

The Empress passes by
Her eyes down, consulting
Some advisor, she complains
About the noise - who exactly
Are they trying to impress?
