Lingportal - Prepositions of Direction
Prepositions of direction,
Show where things are going and that's something that's worth knowing.
Prepositions of direction.
Come on now let's move to the preposition groove!
Use Off when going down or away, or at a distance in a time or a space
Like “keep off the grass” or a week “off school”
Or “I'm off to class” or “get off that stool”
Use ONTO when you put something on something else
Like “put that book back onto the shelf”.
Use OVER to go from one side to another
Like “over the bridge” or “over the summer!”
Prepositions of direction,
Show where things are going and that's something that's worth knowing.
Prepositions of direction.
Come on now let's move to the preposition groove!
Use TO and show where you are heading
Like “I want to go home” or “let's go to the wedding”
Use INTO when you're going inside
Like 'into' a room or into the countryside
A bit like 'in' to indicate a certain space where something could go
Like clothes in a suitcase
Use TOWARDS and explain where it is you are going
Like “I'm going to get up and walk towards him”.
When you use ACROSS remember it's a bit like over
To show you are going from one side to another
Or you could use THROUGH to pass in and out
Like “I cut through the forest when I was walking about”
FROM shows the place where it all began
The start of your journey, like “I came from Milan”
Use ALONG beside a point or an area
Like “along this street” or “along the corridor”
Prepositions of direction,
Show where things are going and that's something that's worth knowing.
Prepositions of direction.
Come on now let's move to the preposition groove!
PAST can be used to show the further side
Like “he rode past the shop when he was riding his bike”
DOWN can indicate a lower place
Like “down the road” or “down the staircase”
The opposite is UP, which shows a higher place
Like “up the road” or “up the staircase”.
