Pop the Weasel - Seagulls

I remember I saw seagulls
Swoop down behind the spires
I hadn't yet left England
But like the birds upon the wires
No longer with connection
No ground beneath my feet
Passive as the miles rolled by
Open to my fate.

Down alleyways and ancient streets
The van just rattled on
Not one of the slumbering millions
Would notice I had gone
Through orchards, downs and chalk-lined fields
And all my country boasts
The gulls just seemed to follow us
As we headed for the coast

And arriving there in Folkestone
I had my second chance
But we slipped on board like stowaways
And shipped on through to France
The hours and days, a lifetime gone
It seemed the perfect theft
And when the gangplank hit the deck
I knew that I had left

It's not that life was better there
Oh it's here that I call home
But sometimes on the Neckar's shore
Sat there all alone
I'm sure I smell the ocean
And if I dare to try
High up in the distance
I can hear a seagull cry
