Seth Timbs - The Day They Built Rome

The Day They Built Rome

On the day they built Rome, they started laying the stone
They had to get it all done before dark
Because they needed & city theyʼd been scratching a living
out of sand and dirt and rock
There wasnʼt time to waste only haste to make.
There was no lunch to take, there were no bathroom breaks
and as the sun went down they took a look around
And said “well, I guess we built us a town”

(1st chorus)
There was nothing else they could do
There was nothing else they could do
But look out on the world they knew and try to turn that into Rome too.
There was nothing they couldnʼt do
They thought there was nothing they couldnʼt do
Here in this golden age after they built Rome in a day
On that night they threw a party, it was getting pretty bawdy
They were deep in their leaden cups
They started fighting in the streets they started rolling in the sheets and
It looked like it would never let up.
Outside the city gates the barbarians waited
And they herd whatʼs going on inside and when the noise died down they crept Into town and they didnʼt leave a soul alive.

(2nd chorus)
What else were they supposed to do?
What else were they supposed to do?
In the only world they knew where so much was kept by so few.
They did the only thing they could do
They did the only thing they could do
And melted that golden age when they burnt Rome in a day.

The day they rebuilt Rome some thought they got it all wrong
It had lost all its old world charm
They built on top of the rubble and the rents they were doubled
but they were happy to play along
Outside the city gates the barbarians waited and they settled in the countryside
And out of timbers and stone they built places of their own
and they were safe and warm inside

(repeat 1st chorus)
