Forgotten Faces - The Grim Phantasm

It was no wonder his condition terrified
It infected me by slow, yet certain degrees
Late at night, in the seventh or eighth day since
I experienced the full power of such feelings
It's here...
The grim phantasm!
Sleep came not near my couch, while the hours waned away
I couldn't reason off the nervousness which had dominion over me
I tried to convince myself that all of what I felt was
Due to the gloomy furniture of the room
But my efforts were worthless!
An irrepressible tremor gradually pervaded my frame
There sat upon my chest an incubus so sick and horrid
I uplifted myself from the pillows
Overpowered by a sentiment of horror
I threw on my clothes with haste and began to pace rapidly to and fro
I took but a few turns in this manner
When I heard his steps upon the stairs
Knocking rapidly, a sense of mad hilarity
And he asked me, "and you have not seen it?"
"So you shall!"
He threw open the window to the storm
A tempestuous yet sternly beautiful night
"You mustn't behold this!" and with a gentle violence
I led him from the window to his seat
"Let us close this casement
The air is chilling and dangerous
Here is one of your favorite romances!
I will read, and you will listen
It is called 'The Mad Trist of the Hero Ethelred'
We shall read and pass this horrible night here away together"
And so, Usher listened. Vivaciously, he hearkened
My plan was a success! My plan was a success
But the morale of my existence rots with the manor...
