Kern Ramble - The Rain at His Back

He drove into Memphis as the rain was coming down
On a road that wasn't headed anywhere but town to town
He was driving from trouble and some bills he hadn't paid
Rolling into Tennessee with Texas license plates
Crossed the Mississippi crossed the state line
You can't drive away from troubles, when the troubles come from inside

He drove with the rain at his back
And the rain washes everything in its path
You can't have a future when you don't have a past
He drove with the rain at his back

He'd been working at a gas station in Abilene
Trying live a life there, trying to live it clean
But one day his wife took off with their money and their two kids
So he left that gas station to find out where it was they went
Packed a suitcase, a picture of his children, and a gun
He wasn't sure what he'd do with it if he ever caught up with anyone
Sold all his possessions there was nothing he'd really miss
But he didn't have any photographs of himself
It was like he'd never existed

He drove with the rain at his back
And the rain washes everything in its path
You can't have a future when you don't have a past
He drove with the rain at his back

He drove into Memphis as the rain was coming down
On a road that wasn't headed anywhere but town to town
Drove by a cemetery and a thought came to his mind
There's not enough ground on this earth to bury everyone that dies
So if this life is a journey, this life is a ride
Some of us have to make that journey, neither dead nor alive

He drove with the rain at his back
And the rain washes everything in its path
You can't have a future when you don't have a past
He drove with the rain at his back
