John Thorpe - The Spell Is Broken
There's a magic in the dawn as each new day is born
And the fox begins to make his homeward run
From beneath the feathered wing the wee birds start to sing
Their chorus to the first rays of the sun
As the daylight gently creeps a fawn stirs from her sleep
And listens to the wind for signs of danger
And from her bracken bed she raises up her head
Searching for the friend and for the stranger
In the blinking of an eye, it's over bye and bye, forgotten
Locked away somewhere between the waking and the dream
No use wondering why, if only it could last forever
Time goes by and words remain unspoken
The spell is broken
On the jewelled, mossy walls of the tumbling waterfall
Hang liquid beads the colour of the rainbow
Reflecting as they weep the salmon as she leaps
On her journey from the deep back to the shallows
A shaft of sunlight streams and there in its dusty beam
Insects teem in organised confusion
The white tailed rabbit runs when the sound of the hunters' gun
Kills the peace and shatters the illusion
I have watched my children grow and like the melting snow
They leave and then they go their own way
Like wild geese on the wing searching for the spring
They'll return again, someday
The sun is setting low, the evening shadows grow
Colours flow and time remains suspended
The twilight silhouettes on the skyline in the west
Fade away, another day is ended
