Gene Morrissey - Traveller's Tale

When I was just a young boy
A story I was told
One I keep within me
Of a traveller of old
With the strength of a lion
And the wisdom of a thousand years
A model to aspire to
An opponent to fear

Who climbed up a mountain
Who sailed through wind and rain
Who once told somebody
All that he was scared to say
He talked with many creatures
And he fought in many wars
And at night he slept in silence
While the world outside him roared

A man on the beach
In a suit and loosened tie
Stood with his toes in the sand
And a face of ugly pride
He grabbed me by the shoulder
And looked into my eyes
And said that God had blessed him
With a child from the skies
You must come and meet her
In a day or so
So when the weekend came
I headed for the show
The crowd had gathered from far and wide
And he spoke deep from his soul
Held the child to the heights
And told us all her own

How she'll climb up a mountain
How she'll sail through wind and rain
And she'll tell everybody
All that we're too scared to say
She'll talk with many creatures
And she'll fight in many wars
And she'll keep us in silence
While the world outside us roars

As the speech became just echoes
A figure behind me laughed
I turned around to meet the eyes
From descriptive paragraphs
I clambered to his seat
And asked about his life
Asked are you the travelling man
Who overcame such strife

He said son I've climbed a mountain
And I've sailed through wind and rain
But I've never told nobody
All that I'm too scared to say
And I've talked with many creatures
And I've fought in many wars
But I've never slept in silence
While the world outside me roars

I woke up this morning
With a head full of dreams
And a pocket full of memories
That no one has ever seen
Found myself a notebook
And wrote of my new friends
Wrote of who I used to be
And of who I wasn't yet

And how I'll climb up a mountain
How I'll sail through wind and rain
How I'll tell somebody
All that I'm too scared to say
And I'll talk with many creatures
And I'll fight in many wars
And at night I'll sleep in silence
While the world outside me roars
